The 2013 April Great Indy (Pike Township) Cleanup is Just Around the Corner!

Saturday April 27, 2013

KIB’s Great Indy Cleanup is an anti-litter program in partnership with the City of Indianapolis designed to combat heavy litter and debris that has accumulated in public spaces such as streets, alleys, greenspaces and waterways. The Great Indy Cleanup program runs weekends from April through October and provides dumpsters, trash bags and gloves while supplies last. Community groups may sign up for up to two cleanups per year. Please remember, the dumpster provided is not for personal use (cleaning out garages, basements, homeowner association property, etc.) or the personal use of volunteers/neighbors. Disposal of the collected trash is donated by South Side Landfill, and is intended for cleanup of public spaces only. Failure to comply jeopardizes the neighborhood’s ability to benefit from future resources from KIB.

Requests for the April 2013 Great Indy Cleanup will be accepted starting February 11, 2013.

Clean Up Completed At ESI – 4910 West 86th Street

ESI facility in Indianapolis.

Cleanup of the ESI Environmental Inc. site was recently completed by a group of companies considered potentially responsible for the contamination. The companies were doing the cleanup in response to a legal agreement they signed in 2011. On Oct. 9, 2012, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued a notice of completion letter to the companies stating that all of the requirements listed in the agreement had been met.

ESI was a commercial used oil and wastewater treatment facility that filed for bankruptcy on Oct. 1, 2010. EPA started a cleanup of the facility in October 2010. In April 2011, the group of companies, called a PRP group, took over the cleanup in response to the legal agreement.
For more information about the ESI cleanup contact the EPA On-Scene Coordinator Verneta Simon at 800-621-8431, Ext. 63601, 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., weekdays, or simon.verneta@epa.gov

Adopt a “Pike” Block

Every block counts!

Do your part by helping to keep the street, sidewalks, alleyways, curbs and sewer drains around your house clean of litter on an ongoing basis!

Sign up to coordinate neighbors to keep your block clean and beautified through the Adopt-A-Block program with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc.!

Your block will be scored for its cleanliness on a monthly basis, April through October. In return for keeping your block clean, you will receive resources — gloves, trash bags, tools, flowers and trees!

A clean block is a safe block!

• Clean blocks send the signal to criminals that someone cares, and reduces instances of illegal dumping and property crimes.

• Blocks free of litter result in increased property values for our homes.

• The activity of cleaning our block will help us get to know our neighbors and feel a stronger sense of community.
